Keshar Mahal 3D Heritage Reconstruction

Post-earthquake photogrammetric 3D reconstruction of Keshar Mahal, Kathmandu

2016

Following the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake that devastated Kathmandu Valley’s cultural heritage sites, Airlift Technology undertook the 3D reconstruction of Keshar Mahal — a historic palace in the heart of Kathmandu.

Challenge

Many heritage structures were damaged or at risk of further collapse. Architectural documentation was urgently needed to support restoration planning and preserve cultural memory.

Approach

Used UAV-based aerial photogrammetry to capture thousands of overlapping images of the structure. Applied Structure from Motion (SfM) processing to generate a dense 3D point cloud and textured mesh model.

Outcome

Produced a detailed 3D digital model of Keshar Mahal, providing a permanent record of the structure’s pre-restoration state. The methodology was subsequently applied to other heritage sites in the valley.
